Peplum:

Pronounced - (pep-luh m)
Plural -lums
-noun
1. a short full flounce or an extension of a garment below the waist, covering the hips.
2. a short skirt attached to a bodice or jacket.

What makes a garment a peplum is a separate section between the waist and hip line that is usually pleated or gathered to create flare.



The style pf peplum is said to originate from the Greek garment known as peplos and dates back to 500BC The peplos was a simple sleeveless outer garment worn by the women of ancient Greece the peplos was formed from one large rectangle of woven fabric, which was folded and pinned in specific ways to become a gracefully draped tunic-like cloak.  -The Fashion Encyclopedia
